Abstract
We evaluated the recovery of muscle strength after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction to know the adequateness of return to sports activities. From January 2002 to June 2005, 64 patients (64 knees) who received anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using bone-patellar tendon-bone autograft were followed up for a minimum of 1 year. The muscle strength was evaluated using Cybex test at postoperative 6 month and 1 year and Lysholm score at postoperative 1 year. The mean muscle strength of the hamstrings showed 19.1% deficit compared to the contralateral normal knee at 6 months and 4.9% deficit at 1 year after operation(p<0.05). That of the quadriceps showed 91.4% and 47.9% deficit respectively(p<0.05). The mean Lysholm score was 93.6 points(82-100 points). The muscle strength of the hamstrings reached up to the near normal level at 1 year after operation. However that of the quadriceps seemed to be suboptimal level for sports activity. Although the Lysholm score which represents subjective clinical symptoms shows excellent or good outcomes, the muscle weakness of the quadriceps may cause re-injury of anterior cruciate ligament during sports activity or decline of ability in competitive sports.
